5 Tips for Maintaining your Gas Fireplace

  1. Change the remote batteries.  Before calling for a service, check to make sure the remote batteries haven't run down. There are batteries both in the hand-held transmitter as well as the black receiver box located in the fireplace. Pay close attention to the ones in the receiver box. They need to be replaced once or twice a year.
  2.  Clean the glass.  Carbon deposits can bake into the glass creating a permanent foggy residue. Keeping the glass clean will avoid an expensive glass door replacement down the road.  It's tempered glass, so be sure to use a fireplace glass cleaner or other non-ammonia glass cleaner.  If you remove the glass, make sure you know how to secure it back in place to avoid dangerous exhaust gases entering the room.
  3. Log placement. If you notice excessive soot on your gas logs, make sure that one or more logs have not fallen out of place. Correct log placement ensures the best-looking flames and proper ventilation.  Check your owner's manual for a placement diagram.
  4. Dust and dog hair.  If you have a compartment below your fireplace with a louvred door, they are notorious for collecting dust from the room from convection when the fire is on.  Clean the vent with a soft cloth and use a wand attachment to vacuum out whatever has collected down there. Watch out for any delicate wires.
  5.  Inspections.  If you use your fireplace regularly, have it inspected and serviced by a professional once a year.  Regular maintenance can help avoid expensive repairs in the future.

      *  Make sure the pilot is off and the fireplace is cool before attempting any cleaning in the firebox.
